Timeless Art

A testament to earlier times when his world-class resort paid tribute to the ancient Hawaiian spirit, Laurance Rockefeller's vast collection of Asian and Pacific art still graces the walls and lush tropical grounds. Over 1600 museum-quality pieces have been carefully preserved and displayed so that the unique culture of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel will live on for generations to come.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the Mauna Kea Golf course remains the standard by which all other island courses are judged. Eighteen holes of play sport panoramic ocean vistas, prompting Golf Digest to proclaim it the "number one golf course in Hawaii." One of the course's most dramatic features is the famous Third Hole, where surging Pacific inlet waters race to meet the rocky shoreline, creating one of the most photographed landscapes in golf today.

BONUS FEATURES

Recreation

The following activities are available:

Water Sports
In addition to the freshwater pools and poolside whirlpools at both Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, guests may enjoy the white sands of Kauna'oa Bay or Hapuna Beach. Kauna'oa Bay was rated as # 1 beach in America in 2001 and # 5 in the World by The Travel Channel, and # 1 in America in 1993 by Condé Nast Traveler.

Activities also include swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, catamaran riding, whale watching and deep-sea fishing.

Tennis
Mauna Kea Resort's award-winning oceanside Tennis Park, located on the grounds of Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, features 13 Plexipave courts, a state-of-the-art video training facility, an open-air lanai (patio) with breathtaking ocean views of the Pacific, and a Pro Shop with full selection of the prestigious resort's logo apparel. Open daily 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Helicopter Flight-Seeing
Mauna Kea Resort is the only Kohala resort with its own helipad on property. Sunshine Helicopters owns and operates a fleet of six "Black Beauties" equipped with five video cameras and cushioned, virtually soundproof comfort. Activity desks at both hotels make sign up easy whether you want to see Kilauea Volcano to the South or the lush valleys to the east and everything in between. Private charters available.

Stargazing
The sky is so consistently clear over Kohala that even in midmorning, the moon can still be seen hanging over the ocean. Stargazing is one of the most popular activities available at nearby Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. A high-powered telescope is set up three nights a week. While guests view constellations, galaxies and planets, an astronomer shares his knowledge of the wonders of the universe.

Miscellaneous
Guests may also enjoy hiking and jogging, as well as the many historical attractions provided by the Big Island's surrounding areas. And don't miss trying your hand at the resort's two world-class golf courses: Hapuna Golf Course and Mauna Kea Golf Course. A complimentary inter-resort shuttle is available three times per hour for transportation between Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.

Kids Activities

Mauna Kea Resort offers younger guests a "cool" place to enjoy days of fun under the sun. While you relax by the pools or beaches, or play a challenging game of golf at the renowned Mauna Kea or Hapuna golf courses, your children can take part in a wide variety of programs including:
  • Hawaiian arts and crafts
  • Pole fishing
  • T-shirt painting
  • Pool swims
  • Beach treasure/scavenger hunts

It's all part of Mauna Kea Resort's year-round kids program for children from 5 to 12 years of age.

Age-appropriate activities are designed by program counselors to both entertain and educate the children about the culture, arts and crafts, and music of Hawaii. Excursions such as pole fishing and beachcombing let them experience aspects of the Island's lifestyle. The program also incorporates elements of another very popular hotel family amenity, the Kids Club.

Full and half-day sessions are available to families seven days a week.

  • The half-day program is $25 and runs from 9 a.m. to noon daily.
  • The all-day session is $50 and goes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Lunch is included with the full-day schedule.

Daily program itineraries are available at the Concierge Desk. In addition, all children of families visiting Mauna Kea Resort are given an amenities kit upon check-in, regardless if they participate in the program.
