The Island of Lanai is truly a Polynesian paradise, with
spectacular year-round weather, a variety of restful diversions, and a land rich
in history. For your reference, the following section contains useful facts and
information to enhance your visit to Lanai.
Lanai has been one of the best-kept secrets in Hawaii.
Historically known as "the Pineapple Island," it has peacefully let
time go by, watching its neighbor islands grow and change. Lanai’s reputation
is spreading, however, and tourism is gradually increasing. But since 98% of the
island is privately owned, development and tourism are being carefully managed.
Be still your beating heart. Secluded among towering Cook
pines and Banyan trees, the 102-room Lodge at Koele ® will undoubtedly take
your breath away. With its enchanting rustic Hawaiian ambiance and engaging
collection of rare artwork, the atmosphere is both refined and thoroughly
relaxing. The Lodge at Koele is also a place of peerless pampering. Feather
pillows and a four-poster bed await you. Freshly-squeezed pineapple juice is
delivered to your room on arrival. And, from the moment you arrive, a luxury
beyond price - an entirely gracious spirit of service.

At the present time, we offer year-round axis deer (chital) hunting.
These deer were originally brought in from India. A recent census puts
the population on the Island at about 3,000 animals. These are magnificent
animals weighing up to 279 pounds live, and carry six-point antlers
measuring up to 36" along the main beam. Although polished antlers
can be found year-round, the vast majority of bucks display hard racks
from April to November. The rutting period usually occurs May through
September. Axis deer venison is excellent eating and meat hunters are
welcome to hunt year round. These are hardy animals and we recommend any
accurate flat-shooting caliber from 243 and up.
The terrain on the island is steep, rocky and bushy. Comfortable boots
with ankle protection is recommended along with tough jeans and a light,
drab colored, long-sleeve shirt. Some physical conditioning is advised
because the hunter will usually encounter hot, humid weather and rough
hiking conditions.
Success rate for hunters with guide is about 70% for antlered deer, 98%
for does and spikes.

Tide Pools
|
The tide pool experience enables people of all
ages to observe marine life up close without getting wet, providing
hours of entertainment and enjoyment. It’s easy to discover the
fascinating inhabitants of these natural aquariums – the more you
look, the more curious you will become.
A tide pool is a pocket of seawater isolated by
the outgoing tide. Each tide pool contains its own community of
residents adapted to the environmental conditions unique to it. Although
you are most likely to find less of a variety of marine life in the
shallower tide pools closer to the cliffs, the life that exists in these
tide pools is special in that it can adapt to increased water
temperatures and changing salinites. Most marine life is less tolerant
of these harsh environment conditions and thus seek homes in the deeper
tide pools which tend to undergo less water temperature and salinity
fluctuations.
Tide pools also offer a special environment as a
nursery for baby, or juvenile, fish of certain species living in the
adjacent bay. These juvenile fish live and grow here until they are
ready to return to the sea as young adults.
There is something to see in every tide pool, and
the longer you look, the more you’ll discover. Take the time and take
care to explore. It’s an adventure all are sure to enjoy.
Conservation
Hulopoe Bay with its adjacent tide pool areas are
part of a marine life conservation district established in 1976. (Also
included are Manele Bay and Puupehe Cove.) The designation of this area
as such was made in an effort to protect the marine life and its
pristine habitat for future generations to observe and enjoy.
